Gujarat Research Society established Hansraj Jivandas College of Education (HJCE) in 1969 under the leadership of Padma Shri Dr. Madhuri Shah, a nationally and internationally acclaimed educationist, ex- Vice Chancellor of SNDTWU and ex-Chairperson of UGC. HJCE was a manifestation of the foresighted vision of Dr. Madhuri Shah, an educationist par excellence, committed to the goal of nurturing the innate potentialities of every individual.
The former President of the Gujarat Research Society, Smt. Kallolini Hazarat, a multifaceted personality, a firm believer in Life-Long Learning facilitated and played a pivotal role in further strengthening HJCE and transforming it into a top-ranking teacher education institute.

Gujarat Research Society, a premier registered charitable trust and a pioneer multidisciplinary research institute was established in 1936. The society has its head office in Mumbai and a center in Ahmedabad, working constantly for the welfare and education of society. During its last 88 glorious years, under the gamut of Gujarat Research Society, numerous multifaceted premiere institutes have blossomed. Today, Gujarat Research Society boasts of having under its umbrella an autonomous and nationally recognized teacher education institution- HJCE, Jasudben M.L. School and Junior College- affiliated to ICSE and ISC, Bloomingdales Pre-Primary School, Child Guidance Centre, Vocational and Educational Guidance Centre, Health Research Institute, N. Munshi & Smt. K.M. Munshi Diagnostic Clinic, Lions Juhu Centre for Children in Need of Special Care, Pushpa Navnit Shah Centre for Lifelong Learning and Swar Noopur Cultural Centre.
HJCE imparts Teacher Education via its Two-year B.Ed. Degree Programme and One year Diploma Programme in Early Childhood Care and Education. HJCE is one of the best Teacher Education institutions in the country. The college has been awarded by NAAC with ‘A+’ Grade, CGPA 3.53 in its third cycle of re-accreditation and was granted Autonomous status by UGC in 2019 for a period 10 years.
A recognized Gujarati Linguistic Minority institution, HJCE is non-sectarian in all aspects of its functioning. The college is 100% aided by the State Government, permanently affiliated to the University of Mumbai since 1983 and recognized by UGC under Section 2[f] and 12[b] of the UGC Act of 1956. HJCE fulfills the mandatory conditions laid down for recognition by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), University of Mumbai, and Directorate of Higher Education, is functional under the State Government of Maharashtra. HJCE is the recipient of RUSA 2.0 Grant under component 8.
The total intake of the college till the year 2014-15 was 100 students for the one-year B.Ed. Degree Programme. As per December 2014 regulations of NCTE, the one-year B.Ed Programme was changed to two years B.Ed. Degree Programme with one unit comprising of intake of 50 students for F.Y.B.Ed. and 50 for S.Y.B.Ed. From the total admission, 50% seats are reserved for the Gujarati Linguistic Minority Quota and remaining 50% seats for the Public Quota. HJCE strictly follows the admission norms of the Common Entrance Test (CET) CELL, Directorate of Higher Education, and Government of Maharashtra with amendments issued from time to time, for conducting its Minority and Public quota admissions for the Two-Year B.Ed. Degree Programme. The aspiring candidates must clear the B.Ed. Common Entrance Test conducted by the State Government.
Since its inception, HJCE has a thriving Research Centre. Currently the Research and Development Cell of HJCE has 7 Ph.D. Guides in the discipline of Education, Interdisciplinary Studies and enjoys Permanent Recognition from University of Mumbai with a recommendation of 45 intake capacity. HJCE is also an IGNOU Study Centre offering seven Programmes. Till 2019 the college had Personal Contact Programme Centre for M.A. (Education) of IDOL, University of Mumbai.
As a result of the diligent and dedicated work of the dynamic former Principals and highly qualified teacher educators the college is ranked among the top B.Ed. colleges of Mumbai city. Many of the college alumni occupy leading positions in elite schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, India and abroad. The College is continuously engaged in activities that benefit all its stakeholders. Today the college offers training to future teachers and administrators with emphasis on creative pedagogy, research, and harmonious blending of modern technology with Indian values and culture.
